On July 19, 1891, the Vancouver News-Adviser described Pender Harbour this way: Scarcely any place could be more naturally adapted for holidaying than this beautiful waterfront location which has the distinction of being the first landlocked harbour on the mainland north of Vancouver, deep enough for ocean vessels.

DeCourcy Island
One of the prettiest anchorages in the Gulf Islands is Pirates Cove Marine Park at the south-end of DeCourcy Island, a beautiful lagoon-like bay close to Porlier Pass. DeCourcy Island also happens to have a colorful and intriguing history as a result of a community that settled there in the 1920s. DeCourcy’s early colonists were members of the Aquarian Foundation, headed up by Edmund Wilson, more famously known as Brother XII

Vancouver's False Creek
Vancouver’s False Creek is a well known and popular destination for boaters visiting Vancouver. It is sheltered, the bottom has good holding for an anchor, and there are an endless number of things to do without leaving its periphery. For local boaters who have moorage in some other part of Vancouver, anchoring in False Creek for a weekend can be a relaxed afternoon out, a way to test drive the boat in the spring and then stop for a treat or lunch.

Gulf Island Wineries
We sat on the deck of my partner Ian’s trawler, anchored off Prevost Island in a tranquil, sunset-lit bay, sipping Pinot Noir and eating local goat cheese made with truffles, a wine and food pairing that had been recommended by a local winemaker. To the south was Salt Spring Island where we had purchased both the wine and cheese earlier that day and our conversation turned to the wines we’d tasted and the people we’d met.
